About the Airport & Airways Bureau
The Airport/Airways Bureau oversees all aspects concerning state involvement in the public and private airport and airways system in Montana. The bureau owns, operates and maintains 15 public use airports, 23 Non-directional Beacons (NDBs) for navigation, and 68 air-to-ground radios in the state. Additionally, the bureau inspects all public use airports, creates an aeronautical chart and directory, and provides individual and communities with engineering and technical assistance/advice. The Bureau owns and operates the Yellowstone Airport located at West Yellowstone. This seasonal airport receives scheduled air service (presently by SkyWest Airlines) from June 1 through September 30. The airport is the base for the U.S. Forest Service Interagency Fire Control Center which provides smokejumpers and retardant aircraft for land surrounding the Park and southwestern Montana.
About the Position
Serves the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) Aeronautics Division as a project manager for Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) state aviation system plans; airport inspector, planner and manager for MDT airport construction and development projects; an expert airport resource; private airport development resource; manager for airport and aviation records and data; assistance with airport and airway facilities maintenance and management; flight assignments in support of specific division assignments and duties; liaison to public and private aviation interests. Serves at the direction of the Bureau Chief and division Administrator in support of MDT Aeronautics Division mission statement, programs and goals.

Qualifications:
A copy of the required licensure and certification must be attached to application to be considered for this position. Include listing of PIC hours.
Required licensure/certification: FAA Private Pilot (or better) Certificate - airplane single engine land. 500 hours single engine land PIC. FAA Third Class (or better) Medical Certificate.
Education: Knowledge and skills are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in Aeronautical Science, Aviation or Airport Management, Professional Aeronautics or a closely related field such as Aeronautical/Civil Engineering or Construction Management.
Experience: Minimum of 2 years of job-related work experience such as aviation project manager, airport manager, airport planner, construction project manager or similarly related aviation, design, construction, planning, business management or administration duties.
Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered on a case by case basis.
Must be able to pass in-house flight review within the first 6 months of employment.
This position requires a valid driver's license. As a condition of employment, the successful candidate will be required to sign a release form, which authorizes the department to conduct a name based background check and driving record check.
This position may require a DHS/TSA administered background check if requested by that agency for the fulfillment of certain job duties.
