DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides direct mental health services to Montana State Prison inmates. Services are provided on an “outpatient” basis and in the Mental Health Treatment Units on site at the prison. The staff psychiatrist is responsible for quality and effective treatment for patients on the mental health caseload. Is a leader in the organization and provides expert opinions/knowledge to the mental health department and Montana State Prison.
Psychiatric Services:

Evaluates and treats Montana State Prison inmates following current psychiatric professional standards. -
Orders necessary diagnostic studies, prescribes indicated medications, documents treatment rationale, and provides regular clinic appointments to supervise, monitor, and adjust treatment. -
Provides legal reports and testimony regarding patients, as necessary, for guardianship, commitment, treatment, and legal cases. -
Provides expert knowledge for updating mental health policies and procedures. - Assists in the NCCHC accreditation process as requested.
Mental Health Department Team Leader:
- Provides leadership to the mental health department staff by assisting, collaborating, educating, and evaluating the mental health care provided.
- Cooperates with team members and demonstrates respect for mental health, medical, and custody staff.
- Regularly evaluates and monitors the needs of inmates.
- Serves as the Montana State Prison liaison with Montana State Hospital psychiatrists and physicians.
- Maintains open communication and provides collaboration with infirmary physicians.
Consultant:
- Consults with the Mental Health Director and Health Services Bureau Chief regarding Montana State Prison mental health issues, potential liability issues, and quality improvement.
- Serves as an expert consultant for mental health, medical, and custody staff.
- Consults with Department of Corrections Administrative Staff and assists in quality management review for Montana State Prison and other state correctional facilities at the direction of the Director of Corrections or his/her designee.
Qualifications:
Medical Degree and psychiatric residency training, qualifying for board certification in psychiatry. Board Certification in psychiatry preferred. Must be licensed to practice medicine in Montana. 3-4 years of work experience required. Experience in Corrections preferred.
