The Forestry Division, headquartered in Missoula, MT is responsible for planning and implementing forestry and fire management programs through an extensive network of staff located in field offices across the state. The Forestry Division has four major functions: fire & aviation management, forestry assistance, business management, and policy, planning & outreach. This position is located in Helena, MT
The goal of the Aviation Section is to maintain pilot proficiency and provide mission-capable aircraft to support departmental missions efficiently and safely. The Aviation Section operates and maintains a fleet of ten aircraft, consisting of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES & QUALIFICATIONS: This position is an Aircraft Maintenance Specialist for the Air Operations Section. The position is responsible for performing airworthiness inspections and maintenance on Department aircraft, aircraft components, and aircraft support equipment. Perform airworthiness inspections (the driving force of our maintenance program) on Department aircraft, contract aircraft, aircraft components, and aircraft support equipment to provide the most efficient and safe program possible and ensure compliance with FAA regulations, State of Montana , Air Operation policies, and manufacturer and Department requirements. This work requires a thorough knowledge of helicopter and fixed wing aircraft maintenance including special knowledge of Bell UH-1, 206 series helicopters, and Cessna 180 series airplanes. Must have a thorough knowledge of FAA regulations and state policies covering aviation maintenance operations; the U.S. Army helicopter maintenance program; and aircraft inspection and maintenance principles and practices. The work requires skill and ability in discerning potential damage or wear to critical components, making quick and sound decisions on his/her own regarding airworthiness that directly impact human safety, and in performing detailed inspections. Perform heavy maintenance on Department aircraft as required by manufacturer’s instructions, regulatory requirements, or as repair needs arise. This includes performing complex structural repairs, major component repairs or overhauls, electrical and electronics, vibration analysis, and extensive troubleshooting. Perform field aircraft maintenance to ensure airworthiness and reliability to support fire suppression efforts, including inspections and repairs due to incidents and malfunctions. This involves traveling to strategic field locations and performing specialized maintenance and inspection work. The position must determine whether the aircraft can be serviced at remote sites or if it must be moved to a suitable maintenance facility, including coordination of service with managers, arranging ground transportation and service by private providers (e.g., help, tools and hangar space) if needed. Develop and implement aircraft maintenance programs and practices to ensuring the readiness, reliability and safety of aircraft and related support equipment. This involves establishing maintenance schedules and priorities, developing and implementing maintenance procedures and practices, maintenance and repair of fixed and rotary wing aircraft, and providing air operations maintenance coverage statewide when warranted by fire conditions. This work requires the incumbent to maintain current certification as a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)-Certified Airframe and Powerplant Technician with Inspection Authorization (Preferred). Perform a variety of other professional maintenance, or program administration work as assigned by the program manager. This includes attending training or education as needed, representing the agency at conferences and meetings, performing special maintenance. Must be able to perform work involving difficult field conditions (e.g. on fires) and in confined areas, and strenuous lifting (in excess of 100 pounds), during day or night.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma/Equivalency and Technical Diploma.
The required knowledge, skills and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an FAA approved or military flight school; completion of formal training and education in aviation technology from an accredited manufacturer's or trade school; and five years progressively responsible experience.
The position will require the following certifications:
FAA Certified Airframe and Powerplant Technician.
FAA Certified Inspection Authorization. Preferred.
